How to Study with Flashcards Effectively
Flashcards work because they leverage active recall. Forcing your brain to retrieve information rather than passively re-reading it. Studies show active recall is 50% more effective than re-reading for long-term retention. The key is to test yourself, not just look at the answer.
Go through your deck, attempt to answer each card before flipping, and sort cards into “known” and “review” piles. Focus your study time on the review pile. Our built-in study mode does this automatically.
Active Recall: The Science Behind Flashcards
Active recall strengthens neural pathways every time you successfully retrieve information. This is fundamentally different from recognition (seeing an answer and thinking “I knew that”). Our flashcards are designed to require genuine recall, not recognition.
The difficulty level matters too. Cards that are slightly challenging produce stronger memories than cards that are too easy. That's why we offer Basic Recall, Understanding, and Application levels based on Bloom's taxonomy.
How to Use These Flashcards with Spaced Repetition
Spaced repetition means reviewing cards at increasing intervals. Review new cards after 1 day, then 3 days, then 7 days, then 14 days. Cards you get wrong go back to the beginning. Export your flashcards to Anki (using our CSV download) for automatic spaced repetition scheduling.
